Prime Minister Narendra Modi has placed Mizoram firmly on India’s startup map, highlighting its potential as a hub of innovation in the Northeast. Addressing the state virtually due to bad weather, he inaugurated several key projects and applauded Mizoram’s unique blend of natural resources and youthful talent.
Modi noted that with more than 4,500 startups and 25 incubators across the Northeast, the region is fast emerging as an innovation-driven economy.
Education and skill development formed a core part of the Prime Minister’s address. Modi announced the strengthening of Eklavya Model Residential Schools for tribal students and stressed how integrating incubation facilities with training under schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana would nurture homegrown talent. This approach, he said, ensures that innovation is backed by skill, making youth self-reliant and job creators rather than job seekers.
The state is also seeing a rise in startups that blend traditional knowledge with modern technology. From renewable energy initiatives for remote villages to digital marketplaces for local crafts, Mizoram’s entrepreneurs are showing that innovation can emerge from cultural and ecological strengths.
The Prime Minister also stressed the importance of connectivity for Mizoram’s transformation. The recently completed Bairabi–Sairang railway line, now linked with the Rajdhani Express to Delhi, is giving local producers access to wider markets. Alongside this, road and air connectivity under schemes like UDAN are ensuring that even remote areas can connect with national and international networks.
Digital connectivity is expanding rapidly too, with fiber-optic networks, 4G access, and the rollout of 5G creating fertile ground for sectors such as fintech, SaaS, and e-commerce. Modi framed these efforts under the Act East Policy, noting that projects like the Kaladan Multimodal Transport will not only link Mizoram with Southeast Asia but also turn it into a global gateway for trade, tourism, and startups.
