Why in the News

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has launched a ₹2.3 crore Startup Innovation Challenge to accelerate the adoption of rooftop solar power across India and boost Distributed Renewable Energy (DRE) Technologies.

In collaboration with StartUp India, DPIIT, and the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE), the challenge invites Indian startups and innovators to submit solutions under four critical themes:

  1. Affordability: To reduce costs through innovative financing, modular designs, or circular economy models.
  2. Resilience: To prioritize climate adaptation, cybersecurity, and decentralized energy systems.
  3. Inclusivity: To democratize access for low-income households and remote communities.
  4. Environmental Sustainability: To address land-use conflicts, waste, and fossil fuel dependency.

Why This Matters: Solar Power in India

In 2024, solar energy accounted for 7% of India’s total electricity generation, doubling since 2021. The country also added 24 GW of new solar capacity in 2024, more than twice the previous year’s addition, making India the third-largest solar market globally after China and the US.

The National Institute of Solar Energy estimates India’s solar potential to be 748 GW, with a certain assumption, highlighting a vast untapped opportunity. With the government targeting 500 GW of total renewable energy capacity by 2030, rooftop solar plays a critical role in achieving that milestone.
