Why In The News?

Mangaluru might just be the next big thing for India’s startup scene. Former Infosys CFO and investor Mohandas Pai and actor-entrepreneur Suniel Shetty are hyping up the coastal Karnataka city as a future tech and innovation hub.

It all started when entrepreneur Amrit Shenava shared a “return home” guide for Mangaloreans, highlighting how the city’s vibe, affordability, and improving infrastructure make it an ideal place to build something new. Pai responded enthusiastically on X, calling Mangaluru “the next hotspot for innovation in India.”

He pointed out that the city already has around 25,000 tech professionals, great schools and colleges, modern workspaces, and those iconic beaches: all within a relaxed, community-driven lifestyle that’s increasingly appealing to founders tired of metro chaos.

Suniel Shetty, who proudly hails from Mangaluru, echoed Pai’s sentiment. He called the city “a blend of spiritual calm and tech energy,” saying it’s not just a business destination but a place where entrepreneurs can actually live well while creating meaningful ventures.

He believes Mangaluru’s balance of tradition and modernity could make it the next major startup magnet in the country.

Meanwhile, the ecosystem is quietly taking shape. Coworking hubs like Vertex, which recently welcomed Bose’s R&D centre, and WrkWrk are giving startups space to grow.

Networks such as TiE Mangaluru and the Karnataka Digital Economy Mission (KDEM) are connecting founders with mentors, investors, and government programs. Startups in fintech, EVs, agritech, and hospitality are already calling Mangaluru home, signaling a strong shift toward regional innovation.
