Why In The News?

Deepinder Goyal-backed LAT Aerospace has established a new 50,000 sq ft research and development (R&D) facility in Gurugram.

His move brings key engineering activities, such as powertrain development and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) systems, into a centralised campus, giving the startup greater control over prototyping, testing and component manufacturing.

The facility is designed to house multiple in-house laboratories, reflecting LAT’s intention to accelerate its work on short take-off and landing (STOL) aircraft, hybrid-electric architectures, and lightweight aerostructures.

According to co-founder and CEO Surobhi Das, the engineering team is aiming to optimise aircraft weight, build a custom Monte Carlo simulator for predictive testing, and establish a complete ground-architecture for hybrid-electric systems.

From a strategic standpoint, the Gurugram R&D hub marks LAT Aerospace’s move from concept development to operational readiness. It supports India’s efforts to expand domestic aerospace production and improve regional air connectivity.

With an investment of about US $20 million from Zomato founder Deepinder Goyal and plans to raise an additional US $50 million, LAT Aerospace is preparing to scale its operations and serve India’s growing short-haul aviation network.

About LAT Aerospace

LAT Aerospace is an Indian aviation startup founded in 2025 by Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal and former COO Surobhi Das.

Headquartered in Gurugram, the company aims to build short take-off and landing (STOL) aircraft designed for regional connectivity, especially in areas lacking large airports.

Its focus lies in developing hybrid-electric propulsion systems, lightweight aerostructures, and advanced control technologies to make short-haul air travel more efficient and affordable.

Backed by a personal investment of US $20 million from Goyal and plans for further funding, LAT Aerospace is also working on indigenous gas turbine engines with a research team in Bengaluru.
