Google’s $15 B Push into Indian AI Infrastructure

Google has announced a plan to invest $15 billion over the next five years to build a major AI and data infrastructure hub in India.

The centrepiece will be a 1-gigawatt data center and AI campus in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, with the investment stretching through 2030.

This marks Google’s largest-ever investment in India, surpassing even its initial $10 billion commitment announced in 2020. The new hub is intended to become part of Google’s global network of AI centres, scaling to “multiple gigawatts” over time.

What the Hub Will Do & How It Ties Into Google’s Global AI Strategy

The Visakhapatnam hub is more than just servers and buildings. Google plans to deploy its custom Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) locally to enable on-premises AI compute, and offer access to its AI models (such as Gemini) and supporting tooling for building agents and applications.

It will also support core Google services, Search, YouTube, Gmail, and Ads, from this infrastructure. Over time, Google aims for the hub to serve not just India but also other Asian and global markets.

To strengthen connectivity, Google is collaborating with Bharti Airtel for subsea cable infrastructure and with AdaniConneX for the data centre setup.

The hub will double as a global connectivity node, bringing in undersea cable landings and boosting India’s digital backbone.

Implications, Challenges & The Bigger Picture

Google’s massive $15 billion investment comes at a time when India is trying hard to reduce its reliance on foreign tech companies.

The government’s “Make in India” push and growing support for homegrown tech solutions reflect this mood. Yet, Google isn’t a newcomer here: it’s been part of India’s digital story for over two decades, with more than 14,000 employees and deep partnerships across sectors.

That long-standing presence gives it both trust and leverage that few other global tech players enjoy.
