Why In The News?

High-tech farming startup Fragaria Fruits has raised $4 million in seed funding to expand its premium fruit cultivation and operations in Bengaluru. The round was led by WEH Ventures, with participation from Rainmatter, Spiral Ventures, and several angel investors, including Sashi Kumar of Akshayakalpa Organic.

Founded in 2024 by Harish Varadharajan, Damian Lopez-Salazar, and Timothy Van Niekerk, the company aims to revolutionise India’s fruit industry by combining sustainable farming methods with cutting-edge technology.

Operating under its flagship brand, Oh! Fruits, Fragaria currently produces European-style strawberries using vertical farming techniques in Chennai.

The company claims its strawberries are pesticide-free, exceptionally sweet, and have a shelf life that is up to three times longer than that of regular market produce.

With the new capital infusion, Fragaria plans to scale its farming operations to Bengaluru and expand its product range to include other high-value fruits such as blueberries and raspberries, ensuring a year-round supply of premium fruits across India.

The founders believe that Fragaria’s data-driven and sustainable farming model can address inefficiencies in India’s fruit supply chain. The funding will be used to strengthen production capacity, improve logistics, and enhance technology integration.

According to the leadership team, this milestone marks an important step toward building a robust, environmentally responsible fruit ecosystem that delivers consistent quality and freshness to Indian consumers.
