The Internet can be a harsh place to be in, and this week, the co-founders of Giga were the target.
At the centre of this debate are Varun Vummadi and Esha Manideep, IIT Kharagpur graduates and Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia honorees, who are the co-founders of Giga and recently raised $61 million for their company.
But the internet seems to be highlighting something eerie, and that is how they look. One user reposted their picture and noted, “If you raise $61M maybe hire attractive people for the demo”, which gained over 4k+ likes on the internet.
Supporters came to their defence, saying, “When people can’t compete in brilliance, they attack appearance.
That’s not humour, that’s insecurity.”
Others praised their achievements, adding, “Watch them become millionaires while your groyper a** slaves away for a $12/h job. These young founders built something that potentially millions would benefit from.”
However, some users expressed scepticism, alleging that the startup could be a grift designed to let Tony Xu profit directly from DoorDash’s AI customer service contracts.
Comments like “It’s the s***** customer service for DoorDash, the company is funded by the DoorDash CEO. It’s a grift so he can profit directly off the DoorDash AI customer contract” captured the sentiment of critics.
Isis Anchalee created the hashtag #ILookLikeAnEngineer after she was featured in an ad campaign for OneLogin and received comments criticising how she looked. The campaign sparked a broader discussion about stereotypes in tech and who “looks like an engineer.”
Another instance includes how, in a startup in Bengaluru, an employee who collapsed during a Zoom call cited that his quiet demeanour and physical appearance made him an easy target for abusive behaviour from the CEO.
Why do we still judge intelligence or success based on how someone looks? How many brilliant ideas might the world have lost because their creators were dismissed for not fitting a certain image?
In an age that celebrates diversity and inclusion, do we really practice what we preach when it comes to respect and representation?
